Understanding Your Heartprints:  Three Essential Perspectives

To truly understand how heartprints shape your parenting, you need three different ways of seeing, like looking at a photograph from different angles. Each perspective reveals something essential.

Looking Inside

These are the hurts of the past that get hooked by the present. You know those moments when you totally lose it and yell, or feel that heavy sadness in your chest that whispers, ‘There has to be another way.’ These aren’t just reactions. They’re your heart trying to protect you from old wounds being touched.

When those old wounds are pressed, there’s often a familiar chain that
plays out inside us:

Event → Focus → Meaning → Emotion → Action

• Event: Something happens (your child slams a door).
• Focus: You zoom in on one part of it (the noise, the disrespect, the rejection).
• Meaning: Your brain pulls up an old story or a past hurt: ‘They don’t respect me’ or ‘I’m not being heard.’
• Emotion: You feel anger, shame, or fear rise in your chest.
• Action: You react, yelling, withdrawing, or overcontrolling.

The same event can trigger two parents in completely different ways,  simply because they carry different heartprints. When we notice this chain, we create choice. We can pause long enough to see: This isn’t just about my child’s behaviour; it’s about what’s been pressed inside me. Am I reacting to the child within me or responding to the child in front of me?
And from there, a new response becomes possible.

Looking Outside

Growing up, we learn so much from those who raise us. We are like little sponges, soaking up and watching, trying to make sense of the world we now live in. Through daily interactions, we learn how love works, what gets attention, what’s acceptable. This becomes our attachment blueprint, our template for all relationships that we still carry today.

Looking Around

This is the broader view, where we see the connected system around us.
Families carry generations of patterns. War, trauma, cultural shifts – these experiences filter through families, creating invisible rules about emotions, conflict, and connection that we inherit without even knowing it. Same fears, same stories, different generation. Our innate
need to belong to a family drives much of our behaviour and emotions.

Understanding all three perspectives gives us the context we need as we explore what it means to break free from the perfect parent trap. There are many layers to our reactions and behaviours as a parent. They’re built-in, ripe and ready for activation when we become parents ourselves.

This is an invitation to go deep, to explore the parts of you that may be at war with each other, creating the stress and anxiety that ripple through your children and family. Because when you understand where your reactions come from, you can choose how to respond.

Our awareness doesn’t erase the past, but it does give us the power to change the future. When we understand how our experiences have shaped us, we can choose to respond to the child in front of us instead of reacting from the child within us.

This reminder helps us shift the lens. Our hardest parenting moments aren’t evidence that we’re failing, they’re invitations to heal the parts of us that were once left unseen, unheard, or unloved. From here, we can begin to understand not only what’s happening inside us, but also how the wider systems around us have shaped our story.
