The Xtreme World of Billy Kool book excerpt

First I win a contest that makes me the star of a reality TV show. Then I get to do some of the most awesome extreme sports in the world. And my two best friends get to come along for the ride. How lucky am I?

WHO ARE WE?

Hi! I’m Billy Kool and I’m the person telling you these stories. Yep! That’s me. Billy Kool!

I’m not much different to most kids. Most kids think they’re sports legends. I certainly do! Sometimes I imagine being a champion at every single sport that has ever been created. But I’m not. Although, last week, I really was a champion — even if it was only for a few hours.

Our school basketball team had made it to the district final. A reporter from the newspaper was there so it was pretty big news. Somehow I had the basketball in my hands when the time clock was running down.

Someone yelled, ‘Throw the ball!’

I threw the ball from the middle of the court. The bell sounded as it travelled through the air. The ball hit the hoop, rolled around and dropped in. We won the game and we won the championship. The team carried me off the court!

But being a hero didn’t last very long. A week later, nobody remembered the game at all. I thought that the newspaper reporter might have taken a photo of the winning shot. I went online to check out the local paper. I scrolled through to the sports section. There was the story right at the end. My name and picture were nowhere to be seen.

I kept scrolling, trying to find my picture, but instead saw an advertisement for a competition. A production studio was looking for hosts of a new reality TV show about extreme sports.

I told myself that I was going to enter. Why not?

But I thought I had to have more than luck if I was going to win. The video I recorded had to be the best. After a while, I decided the best thing was just to tell the truth. I wrote a draft of my script for the video.

My name is Billy Kool.

I reckon that I would be a great host of a reality show about extreme sports. I reckon
that the show could be called The Xtreme World of Billy Kool. That’s so the best name ever for a show. 

I have two best friends who would also be really good at extreme sports. Their names are Nathan and Sally. We are not scared of anything but are a little bit competitive.

I reckon that I deserve to win this competition, because it has always been my dream to be an extreme sports star.

One of the older kids at school heard that I’d entered the competition. 

‘You’ll never win it, Billy Unkool.’ He laughed at his own stupid joke. ‘Why would they take a little nerd like you?’
